Real Engineering Is Starting to Catch Up With Aquatopia
When I wrote Aquatopia, I built the story around one core idea: the ocean is the best place on Earth to cool something hot, and we don’t need to wait for future technology to prove it. We can build there right now.
This month, that idea stopped being just fiction.
Samsung Is Building Floating Data Centers
Samsung Heavy Industries recently announced they’re building 50-megawatt floating data centers cooled directly by seawater. The first units are headed to Texas, built in partnership with a company called Mousterian. OpenAI has already signed on to use future floating data centers to help run its AI systems.
This is a big deal. Data centers generate enormous amounts of heat, and cooling them takes huge amounts of energy and fresh water on land. Floating them on the ocean solves both problems at once. Seawater is right there, and there’s a nearly unlimited supply of it.
It’s exactly the physics I leaned on when I wrote about a city built inside an undersea seamount in Aquatopia. Different scale, same principle: water is a far better heat sink than air.
Taking It One Step Further
Here’s where I think the real opportunity is, and it’s something I explored in the book. Right now, these floating data centers are designed to dump their waste heat into the ocean. But that heat doesn’t have to be wasted.
Low-grade waste heat, the kind these systems produce, is well suited for two things: pre-warming seawater for desalination, and warming water for aquaponics systems that grow fish and vegetables together in a closed loop.
One input. Three outputs. Compute, fresh water, and food.
It’s not a stretch. The engineering exists today. It just hasn’t been connected together yet, at least not outside the pages of a novel.
Why This Matters
I didn’t write Aquatopia to predict the future. I wrote it because the ocean gets overlooked as a place to build, while everyone looks toward space instead. Watching real companies start to build floating, water-cooled infrastructure, even without the waste-heat loop yet, feels like confirmation that the thinking behind the book isn’t as far-fetched as it might sound.
Space exploration matters too. I’m not arguing against it. But there’s a nearer, cheaper frontier sitting right off our coastlines, and it’s starting to get built.
