Everyone is looking at Mars. I understand the appeal — there’s romance in a rocket, and the cameras love a launch. But when you set the glamour aside and just run the numbers, the case for going up starts to wobble. And the case for going down — into the ocean — gets stronger the longer you look at it.
I spent a career around infrastructure, and infrastructure teaches you to ignore the spectacle and ask the boring questions: What does it cost? What keeps it alive? What happens when things go wrong? Ask those questions about the ocean versus outer space, and the ocean wins almost every one.
It starts with cost
The first thing anyone reasonable notices is the price. It does not cost nearly as much to go down a few fathoms as it does to climb out of Earth’s gravity into space. Every kilogram you lift off this planet is fought for against gravity the whole way up. A kilogram you lower into the sea is carried gently by the water. The difference isn’t small — it’s the difference between a fortune and a fraction of one. Before you weigh anything else, cost alone reorders the whole conversation.
The ocean is the best heat sink on the planet
Here’s the part people miss, and it’s the one I find most interesting. Everything we build that thinks — every computer, every data center, every habitat full of living people — makes heat, and that heat has to go somewhere. In space, that turns out to be surprisingly hard. A vacuum is a wonderful insulator. There’s nothing out there to carry the heat away, so you’re stuck radiating it off slowly, and getting rid of it becomes one of the hardest engineering problems you face.
The ocean is the opposite. Water is one of the finest heat sinks in nature. The deep sea is vast, cold, and endlessly circulating — it will take all the heat you can give it and never warm up in any way you’d notice. The thing that’s a nightmare in space is nearly free underwater.
Deep enough to work, not deep enough to crush you
You don’t have to go to the crushing bottom of the sea to get these advantages. That’s a common misunderstanding. You want a sweet spot — deep enough for cold water and steady pressure, but not so deep that the pressure works against you. The ocean offers ranges like that all over the world, along undersea mountains and rises. You pick your depth. You don’t have to go to the abyss to get the benefits; you only have to go deep enough.
The water shields you
Water does more than cool. It shields. The same ocean that carries away your heat also stands between you and the radiation that a surface — or a planet like Mars with no real atmosphere — can’t keep out. A few fathoms of seawater is a better radiation shield than most of what we could build, and it comes for free.
The ocean cleans your air
And then there’s the quiet advantage that may matter most when things go truly wrong. Picture a supervolcano — a Yellowstone — filling the sky with ash and choking the surface for years. Up there, the very air becomes the enemy.
But here’s the elegant part. A sealed undersea city doesn’t just hide from that bad air behind a wall — it can use the ocean itself as a filter. Anything drawn down from the poisoned surface has to pass through the water first, and the water strips it out. The sea stops being a barrier you hide behind and becomes an active part of your life support, scrubbing the world above before you ever breathe it. Your air isn’t just your own — it’s cleaned by the very thing sheltering you.
Why isn’t anyone doing it?
If the ocean beats space on cost, cooling, shielding, and air, the fair question is: why is everyone still looking up? I don’t think it’s because the ocean is harder. I think it’s because up is where the cameras point. Rockets are photogenic. A sealed city under the sea, quietly doing the same job for a fraction of the cost, doesn’t make a thrilling launch video. The barrier isn’t physics. It’s glamour.
I’m not saying abandon Mars. Run both frontiers — but in the right order. Build the backup close, cheap, and now, while the far one matures. The future is down, not up. At least, it’s down first.
